The well-rounded learners of Elizabeth Seton School-South have exhibited outstanding competence in different fields during this year’s intramural, with the theme: “SILVER: Sports Igniting Life, Vitality, Empowerment, and Responsibility” which is in line with the campus’ celebration of its 25th year anniversary. The three-day event featuring various sports and activities was held from April 12 to 14, 2023, while the awarding took place on April 19, 2023.

The House of St. John XXIII once again proved their tenacity as the house to beat after dominating the overall rankings of Intramural 2023, with the House of St. Paul and the House of San Pedro Calungsod taking the second and third places respectively.

The opening ceremony held on the first day of the event, April 12, 2023 (Wednesday) started with a parade introducing the seven houses and their corresponding gemstones. The program, hosted by Daniel Ian Cultura, Clarence Faye Malaki, and Kerry Robert Arguelles, formally started with a prayer led by Marc Cajayon and the national anthem led by the Setonian Madrigals with their conductor, Ms. Kristine Abad.

The head of the Physical Education and Health (PEH) Department, Ms. Janet Lim, gave her opening & welcome remarks before the school principal, Dr. Roland Agoncillo, officially declared the start of Intramurals 2022-2023. Following the declaration were the productions coordinated by Mr. Dante Vargas, starting with the SILVER group’s performance, highlighting the major sports events that the learners will be competing in. After the SILVER performance, the flag and fan dance dazzled the audience before the light and flag ceremony.

The light and flag ceremony began with a parade including torch and flag bearers of each house and the presentation of the official Intramural flag.

After the parade, the learners took their oath of sportsmanship led by Matthew Alumbres from the House of St. John XXIII.

To conclude the opening ceremony, the house parents participated in the ceremonial toss led by Ms. Janet Lim and witnessed by Dr. Roland Agoncillo along with the school’s assistant principal, Ms. Agnes del Rosario.

Not even the gloomy weather during the second day of the intramurals, April 13, 2023 (Thursday), did anything to dampen the spirits of the learners. Despite the rain, the learners still gave their best in the games. However, due to the cancellation of some events for the students’ safety, the management adjusted some activities in favor of having good weather conditions. In line with this, the awarding ceremony was also adjusted to April 19 instead of the original plan to have it on the last day of the event.

On the final day of intramural 2023, April 14, 2023 (Friday), the most-awaited major event took place. The cheering & cheer dance competition allowed the students to showcase the strengths of their houses through their cheers, followed by spectacular dance routines to various hit songs spanning 25 years. Among the exciting performances of all the houses, the performance of the House of St. Peter won the judges and audiences over with their impressive synchronization, while the incredible performances of the House of San Pedro Calungsod and the House of St. James the Great placed second and third respectively.

Another highlight of the final day was the Silver Quiz Bee about the history of the school, especially the milestones within the 25 years of its operation. The House of St. Peter once again ranked first, while the House of St. John Paul II and the House of San Lorenzo Ruiz tied in second place.

In an interview with the head of the department organizing the event, Ms. Janet Lim shared some of the work that went into the preparation of the event.

According to Ms. Janet, “Extensive preparations were made to make sure that the PE department would not miss anything. Everything was prepared ahead of time through the initiative of our very own, Sir Dante.”

When asked about what made this year’s intramural different from the previous years, Ms. Janet responded: “The department tried its best to offer the traditional intramural events in Seton Cavite. However, some modifications were enforced because of the new normal setup. Before there was a Cheering event, a 7-minute presentation of cheer, and lots of human formation, but because we want to always ensure the safety of all Setonians, the department decided to have the Integrated Cheering-Cheerdance Competition. Moreover, some game rules were modified to meet the athletic abilities of our Setonian learners whom we consider ‘pandemic babies.’

Ms. Janet also showed appreciation towards everyone who organized and those who participated in the event. “As the head of the PEH dept, I saw the diligence of the PE department to ensure the organization of the Intramural events, and that made me so proud. With regards to the learners, I saw the willingness of the Setonian athletes to show to the world their real talents. But my most unforgettable experience was being moved by the compassion and kindness of Setonians, not only to their teammates, but also to their competitors. As the event organizer, I have always reminded everybody not to only value victories, but also understand and accept those moments of defeats. I am humbled by these experiences. I am forever grateful to our dear Lord for allowing me to witness everything in the recently concluded HS Intramural 2023,” she said.

The interview concluded with Ms. Janet saying that the department will do its best to keep improving for the Setonian learners counting on them.

The success of Intramural 2022-2023 once again proves that Setonians are incredibly skilled and principled individuals with good sportsmanship.

Gold and Green in the 44th Southeast Asian Age Group Swimming Championships

Setonians, once again, never failed to strive for excellence in the 44th Southeast Asian Age Group Swimming Championships held last December 17-19, 2023 in The Bukit Jalil Stadium, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The said competition is considered to be one of the major and biggest events for Philippine swimmers. They undergo various qualifying competitions, and the Philippine Swimming Incorporated will discern and select the top swimmers most fitting to represent the country. This competition is usually held during December after all countries are finished selecting their respective representatives. The previous 43rd SEA AGE championships took place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia with Matthew Alumbres and Kaniezia Malijan.

Going into the competition was very nerve-racking as it hasn’t even been a month since I got back to my daily training. It felt as if I was going to war with a gun and no bullets while the opposing side already had their machine guns ready to fire. I was tasked to lead as one of the team captains of the Junior National Philippine Team by the head coach. I was given a responsibility to attend to and take care of my teammates and especially my younger juniors,” said by one of the seniors of the Junior Philippine Team, Matthew Alumbres, on how he felt during the competition itself. Matthew Alumbres is considered to be one of the oldest Setonian swimmers that has competed in several major competitions such as the Palarong Pambansa.

Months before the competition, even before the final roster of competitors came out, my coaches from the Seton Swim Team prepared me for the competition because I made the podium in the Grand-Prix National Championships. The training was very harsh plus when the official list of swimmers for the competition was released, we had special training sessions every Saturday and Sunday. In total I had to train about 8 times a week in preparation for the competition,” said by one of the rookies of the Junior Philippine Team, Matt Nerison, on how the preparation went prior to this major competition. Matt Nerison is considered to be one of the Juniors of Seton Saints that surprised a lot with his commendable performance despite the effects of the pandemic.

These talented athletes were able to raise our flag along with the other Southeast Asian countries, improve their times, and were able to swim their best. Now, the Grand Prix Qualifying Competitions await all the Philippine swimmers for another year of skill and speed.

Hearts, romance, and the different variations of love weren’t the only things celebrated this Valentine’s month as Elizabeth Seton School-South (ESS-South) celebrates “QuintESSence: Epitome of Strength and Success” in the A.Y. 2022-2023 School Fair. The three-day event, which took place from February 9 to 11, 2023, was filled with various activities that aim to “develop deeper connections with the other members of the ESS community as well as foster memorable bonding moments with our families.”

Thursday, February 9. The first day of this momentous event commenced with an Institutional Holy Mass which was attended by Grades 3 to 6 and High School Students. Then, a parade that showcased the creative stylings of the learners as they strolled through the campus in their silver-bedazzled outfits, paying homage to the 25 years of Setonian excellence that ESS-South followed. The parade led the students to the Catherine Seton Square, where the kick-off program hosted by Sir Path Tacbad and Ms. Bianca Palmero took place. The opening prayer was led by the Senyas Club, and the national anthem was led by the Setonian Madrigals. There were two significant announcements declared during this ceremony: the History Wall of Elizabeth Seton School, now to be seen in the Reception Lobby and the walkway along the Swimming Pool Area, was officially unveiled, and the formal launch of the Solar Panel Project in Seton’s partnership with Vivant COREnergy Incorporated, signifying that the campus’ primary source of power is now through the use of solar panels. The festive performance of the General Emilio Aguinaldo National High School Drum & Lyre Band and the announcement of winners for the Best Dressed Section per Division was met with lively cheer and applause from Setonians as the kick off ceremony came to a close.

Friday, February 10. The second day of the school fair was met with vivid colors and blaring music as SAYAW 2023 (Indak Setonian), a Field Demonstration performed by learners from Primary and Grade School Divisions, took place. As part of the Physical Education program, this Field Demonstration aims to “holistically develop the Setonians while showcasing their talents through dancing.” On this day, performances from Kindergarten (morning session) students and Grades 5-6 were witnessed by invited parents, guardians, and fellow Setonians. Aside from this, a Talent Show sponsored by the Family Council also occurred. “Silverrific Setonians: A Showcase of Talents” was a fundraising event which aimed to inspire talent among Setonian learners and raise funds for the Family Council’s sponsorship in different school activities, and fund the HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter installation in all the airconditioning units of all the classrooms in ESS-South. A Sumobot Competition among selected Grades 4 and 6 learners also took place along with the High School Valorant Competition between the different Houses as led by the Information and Communications Technology and Robotics Department.

Saturday, February 11. The Indak Setonian Field Demonstration continued as the Batch 2 participants showcased their talents in their lively performances and were met with tremendous applause from their audiences. The performers included learners from Nursery & Kindergarten (afternoon session), and Grades 1, 2, 3, and 4. On the same day, the Basketball and Volleyball Unity games in which selected High School House Members and ESS employees got the chance to exhibit the Setonian qualities of respect, focus, and collaboration. Finally, the event that closed the three-day occasion was the QuintESSence Night, a School Fair Night event that was hosted and made possible by the Supreme Student Council. The gathering consisted of two main programs: a Setonian Live Concert and a Cosplay Contest, in which the students were able to display their creativity, talent, and passion in a night that aims to bring the Setonian community together in camaraderie.

Throughout the three-day event, Setonians made the most out of the time allotted within the day by exploring and experiencing the different booths and fun rides provided by the Elizabeth Seton School – Faculty and Staff Empowerment Collegiality Council and the different High School Houses.

ESS-South has undergone yet another successful school fair event, one that has manifested the quintessence of the 25 years it celebrates.

Grade 10 students embodied excellence in entrepreneurship this January 2023 at their Business Simulation for TLE 10. They enthusiastically served from Mondays to Wednesdays, at the ESS-South Activity Area. Each week, a different section conducted their Business Simulation. On Mondays and Tuesdays, Grade 10 students opened their food carts to Setonians on campus. Meanwhile, on Wednesdays, they held a fine dining event open to all Setonians, alumni, and outsiders.

The first to conduct their Business Simulation was Grade 10 Imus. They named it “The Imus Family,” as inspired by the franchise of “The Addams Family.” On January 9 and 10, they opened The Imus Family food cart, serving specialty rice meals, snacks, and beverages. On January 11, the “Wednesday Rave’n” fine dining was held from 4:30 to 7:00 pm.

Next, Grade 10 Kawit held their Business Simulation named “KawiTreats,” serving nostalgic street food. On January 15 and 16, they served at their food carts which offered street food, pins and stickers, and a dedication feature. Then, last January 17, they held their fine dining event entitled “Indak: Sumabay sa Musika” from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.

Lastly, Grade 10 Noveleta opened “NOVE Me Tangere,” inspired by Jose Rizal’s novel, “Noli Me Tangere.” The students of Grade 10 Noveleta served Filipino food and beverages in their food cart on January 23 and 24. Finally, last January 25, they held the “Las Islas Noveleta,” a fine dining event, from 4:30 to 7:00 pm.

This year’s Business Simulation was the first to be held in-person since the pandemic. Ms. She Canuday, the Grade 10 TLE teacher, said that the difference between this year’s business simulation and the business simulation held pre-pandemic is that “for this school year, we applied the hybrid set-up of simulating business. Learners were engaged in more fun, knowledgeable, and productive business simulation activity applying the concepts of setting up a food cart business with the integration of eCommerce in which decision-making and teamwork skills were exercised and built.“

Joyful Beginnings by Lighting the Christmas Tree

Elizabeth Seton School – South (ESS-South) celebrated the yearly Christmas Tree Lighting last November 24, 2022, in front of the Seton Chapel. It was celebrated by the notable figures of ESS-South and selected students to help spread joy and cheer as we commemorate the upcoming birthday of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

The introduction of the program was led by Sister Edna, followed by an opening hymn of “Emmanuel” sung by the Setonian Madrigals. Next was a reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah and the Responsorial Psalm. After the Gospel of the Lord, the School President, Dr. Roberto T. Borromeo, shared a Christmas message.

Intercessions by Dr. Febe Marie Suarez, Kapitana Juliet Sapinoso, Mr. Manny Tagbago, Ms. Ligaya Quiambao, Ms. Ann Samson, and Ms. Gloria Medina also came after.

The prayer was led by the School Principal, Dr. Roland Niño Agoncillo. Followed by the most awaited moment, the countdown, was led by Dr. Borromeo, and the Christmas Tree was illuminated. A performance by the Setonian Madrigals of the songs “Himig ng Pasko” and “Kumukutikutitap” was followed by an energetic performance by the dance club CNRG with the remix of Christmas classics “Santa is Coming to Town”, “All I want for Christmas”, and “Jingle Bell Rock”

This isn’t the only event celebrating the Christmas season that happened in ESS-South. Following the Christmas Pail event that was done last academic year, the seven Houses shared pails of goods for those in need. Another activity was led by the Supreme Student Council (SSC), the “Secret Santa” letter giving, where students have the ability to send Christmas cards to their schoolmates. These letters were then individually distributed by the SSC during the Students’ Christmas Party. Through these Christmas activities done by the campus we can definitely feel the Christmas spirit.

To quote the Gospel of the Lord, “What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race, the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” With the Christmas Tree decorated and adorned, alongside the sharing of our blessings through the Christmas Pails, and the heart warming act of giving and receiving of letters, this signifies that we welcome Christ among us and may it ensure that we will never lose our way as lights guide us to the perfect light.

As Elizabeth Seton School-South (ESS-South) gradually returned to the in-person modality, they also began to practice career week traditions that were put on hold during the online phase. Along with selected alumni speakers and the GuidanceNGO, ESS-South was able to hold another successful career week spearheaded by the Center for Student Well-being (CSWB) held last October 17-24, 2022 with the theme#FLEX: Finding Clarity and Purpose in Setonian’s Career Blueprints.”

October 17, 2022, to start, was specifically allotted for the Grade 12 learners. They attended school in their formal attire in preparation for their mock interview headed by the CSWB. As these learners draw near to their entry in college, the activity was able to hone their communication skills for the mandatory interviews held during the application process in colleges.

On October 19, 2022, the Senior High School (SHS) learners attended a webinar entitled Gearing Up: College Testimonials by Alumni. The first alumni speaker was Danna Leigh G. Amposta who currently studies BS Nursing at The De La Salle Health and Sciences Institute, followed by Micah Angeline P. Atesor who currently studies AB Psychology at The De La Salle University – Dasmariñas. The third alumni speaker was Mogens Albert R. Fukuhara who is currently taking up BS Architecture at The De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde, followed by Jose Miguel A. Escalona who is currently taking up BS Computer Science at The De La Salle University – Manila. The last alumni speaker was Joaquin Alfonso B. Rivera who is currently studying BS Business Management at The Ateneo De Manila University.

On October 20, 2022, the same SHS learners were given the chance to attend the Colleges and Universities Webinar in collaboration with six prestigious universities in the Philippines with their respective representatives from De La Salle University – Dasmariñas, De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute, De La Salle University – Manila, De La Salle College of Saint Benilde, Mapua University, and University of Santo Tomas.

On the same day, the Grade 10 learners were also given the opportunity to attend a Career Talk by Alumni Professionals with the presence of five selected alumni speakers. Raniella Ylouise A. Mata, who graduated BS Medical Technology at the University of Santo Tomas, kick-started this webinar, followed by Gaea Marelle J. Miranda, MSc, RPsy who graduated AB Behavioral Sciences at the University of the Philippines – Manila. The third speaker was Atty. Maria Ahren P. Vergara whose talk also focused on law school, followed by Kriz Mae B. Alcala – Abellar. The last speaker was Lorenzo Thaddeus A. Papa who graduated BS Business Administration, Major in Computer Applications at the De La Salle College of Saint Benilde.

On October 21, 2022, the Choices Webinar by GuidanceNGO took place for the Grade 10 learners. This talk was headed by Mr. Serafin “Junn” Geronimo. Through this webinar, the students obtained a clear vision of the paths ahead of them and were able to have a glimpse of their chosen strands and courses.

Later that day, the SHS learners listened to the Career Clinic and College Fair by GuidanceNGO. This webinar acted as a “gateway” for these students to explore and discover different career paths. A wide variety of college courses were discussed as well as the job opportunities for each course stated.

On October 22, 2022, the parents of Preschool to SHS learners had the chance to attend the Career Webinar for Parents by GuidanceNGO. This webinar aimed to point out the importance of parents’ guidance and support as they continuously walk their children through their journey in life.

On October 24, 2022, the Grade 12 learners were given the opportunity to dig deeper into the different colleges and universities through the College and University Fair in the form of an Audio Visual Presentation (AVP). The CSWB reached out to different schools and asked for necessary information such as application requirements, application period, entrance exam dates, and the release of their application results. The included schools were also asked to give a 10-minute AVP of their program offerings to serve as reference for the learners’ college applications.

As ESS-South strives to produce career-ready learners, the CSWB shall continue to hold career counseling sessions from October to February in order to guide the learners in finding clarity and building a strong foundation for their bright futures.

Ceremonious House Induction: New Members, New Homes

The House Induction marked a significant day for the seven Houses of the Seton-South community to formally welcome their newest members with open arms. This annual ceremony was held last November 23, 2022 in the school’s chapel, and was hosted by Petrice Gueverra from the House of St. James and Matthew Beltran from the House of San Lorenzo Ruiz.

The ceremony kicked off with opening remarks from our School President, Dr. Roberto T. Borromeo as well as a brief introduction to each House. The Supreme Student Council (SSC) also prepared an Audio Visual Presentation (AVP) that highlighted the events and activities done by the Houses during this academic year.

The climax of the event was the Pinning Ceremony, in which the new members of each House were presented by their House Chancellors and called upon to the front one by one to receive their House pins. These served as the symbols of their membership and unwavering commitment to serve and unite with their fellow Setonians. To officially induct the new additions to the Houses, the new members recited an oath to pledge their loyalty to their new homes and were guided by Trisha Mae Rojales, the SSC Chancellor.

The ceremony then came to a close with an intermission number. More specifically, a song performed by the Mighty Band. The song they picked is entitled, “Kaleidoscope World,” and was dedicated to the newly inducted House members. This was then followed by final acknowledgements from the masters of ceremony, in which they expressed nothing less than their unconditional gratitude towards everyone who came together to commemorate this significant event.

Additionally, the announcement of the Mother Seton Cup title holder for A.Y. 2020-2021 had also taken place on the day of the event, in which the House of San Pedro Calungsod had triumphed. Furthermore, the House flags were displayed during the event as well as the colorful confetti corresponding to the main colors of each house.

This served as the 8th House Induction held in ESS-South, and the first one held face-to-face after quite a while since the past two House Inductions were done virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, every year each House is greeted with new faces and bright minds to continue their legacies. The ceremony concluded successfully as the new members took their first step into their respective Houses that would act as their families and guiding hands all throughout the A.Y. 2022-2023 and even possibly their entire high school lives.

SSC Presents "Ready, SET-ON, Start!": What Should We Tune in On?

Last August 31, 2022, the newly elected student leaders of the Supreme Student Council (SSC) for the A.Y. 2022-2023, along with the Grade School Student Council and Family Council, were welcomed at their Oath-taking Ceremony led by Dr. Roberto T. Borromeo. This was done after the holy celebration at ESS-South’s Chapel during KamPiSe 2022, which was witnessed by Setonians present during the face-to-face KamPiSe event on the campus, alongside members of the school administration and faculty.

The SSC is composed of the Supreme Core, Graphics Committee, Outreach Committee, and Public Relations Committee. Each of them is made up of student leaders who are dedicated to representing the student body with their utmost effort.

Starting the academic year with a brand new logo and hashtag, #OneLevelUp, the organization presents the theme, “Ready, SET-ON, Start: Leveling Up and Beyond”. To give an insight into the thought process behind the theme and hashtag, SSC Chancellor, Trisha Rojales, stated in an interview that they thought of the final theme with the goal of wanting to encompass how the SSC will “work through our transition back to face-to-face classes” while helping in the “upkeep of a safe and fun learning environment”. Furthermore, Trisha says that some factors they considered while thinking of the theme were uniqueness and memorability—exhibiting a brand new era of the organization, always ready to serve the student body, “so that Setonians will be made known of our [SSC] presence both online and offline”.

When asked what message she can give to fellow Setonians about what is to be expected from the organization, Trisha added that some activities we can look forward to this school year, with everyone excited for the events to be held physically once again, are grand programs on the 25th of every month, concerts, and the traditional face-to-face batch parties, with the ultimate goal to “bring upon a new and memorable era of the SSC”. It was also mentioned that one of their goals is to formulate more exciting events focused on satisfying and catering to the students’ wants and needs. Looking back on the past two school years, one challenge the online setting brought was the implementation of traditional practices while still being able to instill the same energy and excitement as when they occur in person.

To conclude the interview, one quote that represents an idea the organization wants to strengthen, according to Trisha, is “As a leader… your principal job is to create an operating environment where others can do great things”. One of SSC’s biggest goals for this year is to be student-centered in all aspects, wanting Setonians to know that their voices are heard as they continuously listen to comments and suggestions while simultaneously creating an environment where everyone can “enjoy and grow as individuals working collectively”.

As everyone returns to in-person sessions after two years, the students are assured that the SSC will be walking and running alongside them during a brand new adventure as they progress one level higher at every step of the way—all together prepared to face and learn from the challenges that they will take on, more confidently than ever declaring “Ready, SET-ON, Start!”
